HYDRA HEAD SXSW poster

above: poster for the imminently approaching hydra head showcase show, at this year's south by southwest "festival". the poster is a collaborative effort between tom neely and myself, tom having done the central figure/tree, and i the lettering and colors.
apologies to tom for ruining his spacious drawing with my clutter.

...and, to answer a question raised in the last post:

-the guitar pictured in the last post was made for me by the electrical guitar company: click here

good stuff from the last week: deadwood season 2, "the sea" by john banville, cavity "laid insignificant", mamiffer "hirror ennifer", the ultimates vol. 1 and 2, shining "through years of oppression", cat power "moon pix", new comics from this week and last - daredevil, captain america, and the programme....

  1. hey, i'm in good company, I just took delivery of my EGC baritone, what an incredible instrument. mine is the one pictured on Kevins myspace right now, with the weirdly shaped pickguard.

  2. As an artworks its nice, but as a poster its horrible. Text is hard to read hence the poster does not serve its purpose to inform about the event. Nicely chosen typography would do better in this case.

    Best Regards.

  3. I wish I could go to SXSW.

Captain America has been a really good. I've been wondering what else you've been reading.

  5. I love the poster. I am pretty stoked about the SXSW line up, although less stoked since a bevy of my friends will be there sans myself.

  6. haha- i guess michael isn't too familiar with rock art posters. or maybe he just has more traditional taste in design. but what about the masters of psychedelic poster art like: bob schnepf, victor moscoso, bob masse, wes wilson, rick griffin? or modern poster geniuses like seripop? a lot of their work is even harder to read than aaron's lettering.

maybe i'm biased because i was involved with this project, but i don't think the point of this poster was to "advertise" as much as it was to make a cool piece of artwork.

  8. Hydrahead was and is my main inspiration and motivation to do graphic design / art. The artwork you come up with is brilliant. Just want to let you know that I do have a 'design blog' ongoing, and it'd be cool if you could drop by for a bit. Keep the good work going man.

Typography isn't chosen. A typeface may be but typography is way more than that. The painted lettering in the poster IS typography. Typography is the skill of applying created or predefined letterforms. The use of language above suggests you have a long way to go if you think you have any idea of graphics.
